Rating Scale

A continuous drag-handle slider for nuanced scoring.

    Beginner2 min readUpdated 19 Oct 2026

The Rating Scale question presents a horizontal slider with a drag handle. Respondents slide the handle to any point on the scale rather than clicking a discrete number. The slider feels less forced than a numbered scale and can capture more nuanced positions — especially useful on mobile where dragging is a natural gesture.

    When to use it

    Reach for Rating Scale when:

    • you want continuous rather than stepped data
    • the question is about intensity, degree, or range (price sensitivity, importance, agreement strength)
    • you are asking respondents to position themselves on a spectrum rather than pick from fixed options

    How to configure it

Open the question in the builder and expand Settings:

    • Minimum value — the left-end value (e.g. 0 or 1).
    • Maximum value — the right-end value (e.g. 100 or 10).
    • Step size — the increment per position (e.g. 1, 5, 10).
    • Default value — the starting position of the handle before the respondent interacts.
    • Low label — text beside the minimum value.
    • High label — text beside the maximum value.
    • Show current value — display the numeric value as the respondent drags.
    • Required — force an interaction before the respondent can continue.

    Tips

Tip — Set the default handle to the midpoint (e.g. 50 on a 0–100 scale) rather than one extreme. A handle anchored at 0 biases responses upward; a neutral start reduces anchoring bias.

Tip — Use the Rating Scale for price-sensitivity questions: "What is the maximum monthly price you would consider paying for this feature?" with a range of £0–£50 in £5 steps gives clean, actionable pricing data.
