Short Text
Collect a brief single-line answer.
The Short Text question lets respondents type a single-line answer. Use it whenever the answer fits in a few words — a name, an email address, a city, a job title, a short label.
When to use it
Reach for Short Text when:
- you need a specific piece of information that has a predictable shape (name, phone, ID)
- the answer is short enough that a single line is natural
- you want to enforce a format like email or URL
Avoid Short Text for open feedback or anything where respondents might want to write several sentences — use Long Text instead.
How to configure it
Open the question in the builder and expand Settings:
- Placeholder — ghost text shown before the respondent types, e.g. "Your full name".
- Character limit — set a maximum length to keep answers concise.
- Input validation — restrict answers to a specific format:
- URL
- Number
- Phone
- Custom regular expression
- Required — force an answer before the respondent can continue.
Tips
Tip — Turn on the Email validation option when collecting email addresses. Respondents see an inline error if they type something that is not a valid email, catching typos before submission.
Tip — Use the placeholder to give an example, not a label. "e.g. john@company.com" is more useful than "Enter your email".
