Long Text
Collect a detailed, multi-line free-form answer.
The Long Text question gives respondents a multi-line text area for detailed answers. Use it whenever you want a narrative response — a suggestion, a story, a description, or any answer that needs more than a sentence.
When to use it
Reach for Long Text when:
- you want open qualitative feedback ("What could we do better?")
- you are asking for a detailed description or explanation
- the answer length is unpredictable and you do not want to constrain it
Avoid Long Text for short, structured inputs — use Short Text instead.
How to configure it
Open the question in the builder and expand Settings:
- Placeholder — ghost text shown before the respondent types.
- Minimum length — require a minimum number of characters before the answer is accepted.
- Maximum length — cap the response at a specific character count.
- Rows — set the initial visible height of the text area.
- Required — force an answer before the respondent can continue.
Tips
Tip — Add a word-count or length hint in the question text itself: "In 2–3 sentences, tell us what happened." This guides response length without enforcing a hard limit.
Tip — Long Text responses are eligible for AI-powered sentiment analysis and summarisation in the Reports section. Open-ended questions paired with a rating question are especially powerful for understanding the why behind a score.
