Required Questions

Make a question required

Open the question in the builder and turn on Required. Respondents see an asterisk beside it and cannot move past the page until it is answered.

Add validation as well

Required only checks that something was entered. To check that the answer is the right shape, use the validation settings on the same question:

• Formats — email, URL, number, phone, PIN code, GSTIN, PAN, IFSC, or your own pattern.
• Length — minimum and maximum characters.
• Range — minimum and maximum for numbers.
• Selection count — how many checkboxes must be ticked.
• Date range — earliest and latest allowed dates.

You can replace the default error message with your own wording.

Use it sparingly

Every required question is a place a respondent can decide to stop. Make the questions you will actually act on required, and leave the rest optional. If a question is required and someone has no honest answer, they will invent one — which is worse than no answer at all.

Tip — Open-ended "anything else?" questions should almost never be required.
