Dropdown

Single selection from a collapsed list — ideal for long option sets.

The Dropdown question collapses a list of options into a select menu that opens when clicked. It works like Single Choice — only one option can be selected — but takes up far less vertical space. This makes it ideal for long lists where showing all options at once would overwhelm the page.

    When to use it

    Reach for Dropdown when:

    • the list has more than 7 options (countries, states, departments, languages)
    • survey space is limited and a compact single-select is preferable
    • the options are well-known and do not need side-by-side comparison

For short lists where visual comparison matters, use Single Choice.

    How to configure it

Open the question in the builder and expand Settings:

    • Options — add, edit, reorder, and delete choices.
    • Placeholder — text shown before a selection is made, e.g. "Select your country".
    • Searchable — adds a search input inside the dropdown so respondents can type to filter long lists.
    • Required — force a selection before the respondent can continue.

    Tips

Tip — Enable Searchable for any list with 20 or more options. Scrolling through 50+ countries is frustrating; typing the first two letters is not.

Tip — For a country field, put the most likely countries at the top of the list (or use a region-based pre-sort) before enabling search. Respondents who scroll rather than type will find their choice faster.
